Second Lieutenant Thomas W. Bartle: AIF (Australian Flying Corps)

Son of Susan Ann Elizabeth and the late T.W. Bartle of Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia.

Grand nephew of William and Betty Latham.

Met his death in mid air at Lincoln on 16th June 1917, age 22 yrs.

Thomas was a schoolmaster in Castlemaine prior to enlistment in the 37th Battalion as a private on 14th March 1916.

Due to his previous military experience in the Citizen's Military Forces he was promoted to corporal. Sailed on HMAT Persic from Melbourne in June 1916 for Plymouth. Made a Lance Sergeant and posted to the Royal Flying Corps school of military aeronautics for pilot training. Thomas was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and posted to the AFC in April 1917 and was completing his training with 69 (Australian) Squadron when he was killed as a result of an aircraft accident at Scampton aerodrome Lincoln on 16th June 1917.
